The what, the why, and the how

Most workforce training fails for a simple reason: it teaches the what and stops. Here's the task, here's the procedure, sign the roster. Competence on paper; no change in the hallway.

Real behavior change needs three layers. The what: technical skill, done properly and safely. The why: the ethics, self-respect, and interpersonal foundations that make a person own the work rather than perform it. And the how, the thinking skills: reading a changing situation, prioritizing under pressure, deciding well when the plan breaks.

We built the healthcare transporter certification this way: three tiers, one for each layer. And the most common thing participants say about the middle tier isn't about work at all. They say it changed how they handle life. That's not a side effect. That is the effect. People who grow don't just perform better; they stay, they lead, and they raise the standard around them.

If your training program only teaches the what, you don't have a training program. You have an orientation with a certificate.
