Every hospital with an HCAHPS strategy has invested in nursing communication, physician bedside manner, facility upgrades, and satisfaction rounding. Very few have addressed patient transport, even though transporters are among the highest-contact roles in any patient's stay.
Think about a typical inpatient's week: wheeled to imaging, escorted between units, and, on the last day, taken to the door. Every one of those rides is a patient experience moment, and at least six HCAHPS domains feel it. Staff responsiveness: a 30-minute wait for a transport requested 10 minutes after discharge orders is the most visible slowness in the building. Communication with nurses: a transporter who arrives without notice or skips the handoff creates friction that lands on nursing's scores, not transport's. Even medication communication: patients ask transporters clinical questions mid-ride, and an untrained answer creates confusion no one traces back.
Then there is the one nobody thinks about: discharge transport is among the last interactions a patient has with your facility. Months later, when the survey arrives, that final ride is the freshest memory in it. The last impression is a transport.
The stakes are financial, not just reputational. HCAHPS feeds Value-Based Purchasing, which puts up to 2% of Medicare DRG revenue in play. But the fix is not a poster in the transport office. It is training that treats transporters as professionals: how to introduce themselves, how to manage distress mid-ride, how to redirect clinical questions, and why the survey reflects how patients experienced them. When a transporter understands that HCAHPS is not an administrative abstraction but a mirror, behavior changes on its own.
Your patient experience strategy already covers everyone who talks to patients in a room. It should cover the people who move them between rooms.
